took off Vista and installed XP, then the laptop stop working, help!
I have an Acer TravelMate 3040 (the samll nice one!) pre-installed Vista. The small horse seemed to struggling with the big wagon so I decided to take off Vista and install a XP on it.
I used a XP recovery disk from an old Acer laptop to install (do not ask any question about legality like I was asked before, I own both of them). When the small horse rebooted, Xp could not find drivers for quite a few things. I downloaded some drivers from Acer website. But I still have some troubles: No driver for camera (I downloaded but not working) No driver for network controller No driver for PCI device No drive for SM bus controller And the computer could not find wireless card so I have to use wired slot! And I only got VGA mode! Any one give some tips? Thanks a lot in advenace! |

Frank, can you run everest or belarq on the laptop, it might just mean you'll have to grab the drivers from the makers of the cards that are in the pc. for the wireless (hope I got the correct specs) go to http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...=2259&lang=eng that should sort out your wireless after which run MS update and it should find the drivers for the PCI and SM Bus.
Question for you have you looked properly on the Acer website as I just found your laptop with all the drivers for XP... http://www.acer.co.uk/ac/en/GB/content/drivers |

SM Bus issue should be fixed by installing the Intel chipset drivers.

Hi, guys, thanks a lot for all your help.
I am right on the correct way, with your nice tips! Last time when I installed the chipset driver, the machine seemed to stalled so I terminated the process. I tried yesterday again and let it ran overnight. The machine picked up now. I will update how far I can go. |

OK. Sounds like you're making some improvements. Please let us know what errors are still showing.

After tried all the drivers downloaded from Acer site, I found only one function was not working properly, I think it was PCI. Anyway, I started to download MS updates yesterday evening. After a long time, I got all updates installed. And I found PCI worked ok.
Now I have a nice little laptop running nice XP. There is no 'heavy-breathing' any more and battery lasts longer. Great! THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP! |
