Windows Display/driver Boot up problems
Hi All, haven't been here in a while, but really need a lot of help.
I have a Computer that will not boot into windows when a display driver is installed. I have a completely fresh install of XP and everything loads up fine without any installed driver for the MSI K9n6sgm-v motherboard - everything is onboard. Everytime I restart it will always come to the desktop. If i install all driver except for the display adapter - it boots to the desktop fine. Once i install drivers for the display adapter, either the latest drivers, or drivers that come on the CD - once it restarts, it starts to load windows then a black screen - i suspect it has frozen up as there is no windows loading sounds. The same thing also happens when i try loading Vista, once the display driver is installed it just boots up to a black screen. I also tried a proper graphics card that i know works - the same thing again happens. I can boot to safe mode and remove the driver in which case it boot s to desktop with low resolution. also booting with vga mode gives low resolution. I have tried 2 other monitors and the same thing always happens. I am completely out of Ideas so any help would be great. Liam |

Re: Windows Display/driver Boot up problems
could be a fubared GFX chip
I had one did this and I striped it down and baked it in a hot oven (200degrees) for 10 minutes and its worked fine ever since lmao (true story) obviously you can not do this cuz everything is onboard but a GFX card may sort the problem |
Re: Windows Display/driver Boot up problems
I'm wondering if this is one of the MSI boards with an nvidia chipset?
If so, have you loaded any of the MSI utilities such as pc alert? Apparently they are known troublemakers in some cases. |
Re: Windows Display/driver Boot up problems
have you tried an install with the gfx driver as the first thing you instal?
I think its a fubared gfx chip |
Re: Windows Display/driver Boot up problems
Sorry for not getting back sooner
Its on board graphics which is nvidia 6100 chipset. i have tried other graphic cards but the same thing happens all the time, even after a completely fresh windows install, and display driver loaded first before anything else - same thing happens. I just can not get any form of resolution at all. It also happens with Vista and XP Liam |
Re: Windows Display/driver Boot up problems
Just wondering was it doing this before the fresh install?
Another thing if you are installing a seperate graphics card onto a mainboard that has one installed. sometimes windows/bios does not disable the onboard graphics you have to go into bios and turn this off or the GFX cards clash causing problems |
Re: Windows Display/driver Boot up problems
This issue started before I did any fresh installs.
The BIOS is set to automatically disable the onboard graphics when a GFX card s present. It seems to be true as when a monitor is plugged in there is nothing. I am really at a loss as to what else to do with this machine. |
Re: Windows Display/driver Boot up problems
You could try resetting the bios to it's default settings, but change the on-board gfx auto detect to disable.
It sounds like it could be the motherboard? |
