Does Kaspersky actually slow down your BB or just skew the results?
Does anyone know whether Kaspersky actually slows down your internet connection or does it just skew the results that speed tests give but in reality it doesn't affect the speed of your broadband.

Kaspersky is reknowned for skewing speed test results but doesn't effect your speed.

Yes, try a speed test with Kaspersky running then one with it not.

I tried Kaspersky amongst others but settled on Microsoft Security Essentials as it does the job, something unwieldy about it that niggled.

they are just confirming that Kaspersky seemes to be slowing the connection down, they dont say whether it is just skewing the results but the speed isnt affected or whether they are acually slowing the connection down.

Re: Does Kaspersky actually slow down your BB or just skew the results?
Since installing Kaspersky I have noticed that line speed tests have gone completely crazy. Speedtest.net is just one example. I normally test at 10.5 Mbps. Since installing Kaspersky AV I test anywhere between 40 Mbps and 225 Mbps. If I disable Kaspersky line speed tests revert back to normal. I have disabled script blocking and lowered the level of web protection. It makes no difference. What's up?
You obviously didn't read that one. I finally found the culprit that it was indeed Kaspersky. When Kaspersky is switched off the download speed is fine and constant ....When on, download speed is erratic giving readings between 500 KBPS to 75 MB ! (75MB being impossible given my contract and the lines' max capability of 26MB) and up and down like a yo-yo each second. Also this erratic behaviour does affect connectivity to websites. However, the upload is always constant. I've tried switching off individual items under 'settings' to no avail. The only thing that cures this erratic download speed is by switching off completely. Or that one. Case proven IMHO but as I don't use Kaspersky I don't really care! |

It doesn't ay whether or not the speed is acutally affected or not, it just confirms that with Kaspersky running the speed test results go tits up.

From one of the same forums linked to.
Lucian, I already tried that. When I download from a server (including the one you pointed me to) the transfer rates are normal. I just downloaded some very large files from usenet groups and everything behaved normally. Kasperski somehow affects Flash or Java used in line speed web sites. It drives the line speed test results crazy. First there is a hesitation. Then the test will run with absolutely rediculous results - like 225Mbps - which is an almost impossible speed. ALL line speed test sites are affected. Again, disabling Kasperski stops this insane behavior. Prior to installing Kaspersky I consistently tested at 10.5 Mbps down. Now I am all over the place. |

I tried other products, but found that worked best for me. If unsure you should come on here and ask as most give an honest opinion. |
Re: Does Kaspersky actually slow down your BB or just skew the results?
AV products are more a matter of opinion nowadays especially those you pay for.
Kaspersky is a good AV solution as long as you remember it does effect speedtest results and just disable it while you run the test. Personally I use ESET Smart Security. If,as Masque suggested, you had asked for recommendations here or any forum, you'd have been given a long list of different AV solutions from different people all saying how good their's is. There is no reason wht you should not stick with Kaspersky especially seeing as you've just bought it. It is a good AV solution and will protect your PC. |
