non web traffic now throttled off peak

im now being throttled regardless of amount downloaded on non web ports during 3pm-4pm. i wish VM would stop making these measures more and more draconian, im paying for 10mbit not 2mbit!! give me what im paying for! ggrr [/annoyed]

Virgin aren't throttling ports - they are managing P2P and Newsgroup traffic betwenn 5pm and midnight during the week

This is all detailed in the Traffic Management policy www.virginmedia.com/traffic

Unless you hit the download or upload threshold then all other traffic should not be affected

they are throttling irc, ftp, vps, rdp and video conferencing aswell as usenet and torrents and this was happening before 5pm

there is no download (or upload) amount for this throttling its instant

Yep FTP is being throttled, i have to go via vpn to get my speed back, VPN is not throttled for me.

I am on 50 meg so i dont get STM'd

removed vpn from the list, i now have to learn and setup a new technology to get the speed im paying for, or upload the data to a website and suffer the slow logins

indeed, I now have to download ftp via proxy port 443 over VM as I have some servers running ftp on non standard ports.

I too have also noticed oddness outside of published hours but didnt post before as will obviously get shot down.

Should being the operative word given they managed to throttle World of Warcraft v4.

You can use alternative ports to bypass the throttling with premium usenet providers like Astraweb for instance :)

you might find you are hitting your stm allowance before 4pm dude because I think it is quite a low threshold on 10mbit

So how can you suggest they're throttling web traffic if web based speed tests are running at full speed?

Gah sorry, at it with the brain fail again.

In that case yes, I have noticed VM's traffic shaping being weird and catching things it shouldn't. That said web traffic on port 81 runs faster than web traffic on port 80 for me :-/
