50mb installed but now only getting 20mb max ?
 

Hi all,

Can anyone help me please!!!!!!!! This one has me beat.

Just had 50mb installed on Monday and I downloaded allot of stuff Monday as a test and it flew in at 50mb :) but now 2 days later I only get 16-20mb :(. Unless I connect the modem directly to the computer and then it's back to 50mb.

Nothing as changed since Monday my setup as always stayed the same: Modem to Belkin N+ router wired to my computer, I've checked with the laptop over wireless and this also gives me around 16-20mb.

I have checked the speeds at http://www.speedtest.net/ and when downloading through newsbin and they both give me today 16mb ish and on Monday when installed 50mb ish. Just checked and got 15.11mb download and 4.72mb upload by running the above test.

I have swapped the router for an old one and I have also tried the new free one virgin sent me with the same results on all 3. I have even tried putting a 5 point gigabit switch in instead of the router with the same results.

I haven't a clue why I get this speed difference when connecting anything other than straight to the computer from the modem, I understand there can be speed differences when connecting wireless but not wired like me :(

I rang virgin and they see nothing wrong but something very strange is happening please help!!!!!!!!

One thing I can remember and not got a clue if this is anything but the engineer did tell is office I only use my broadband for gaming ?

if u have downloaded a lot of stuff as you just said
that be your answer you maybe under time management
cut it back for a day or so a
an you soon see the difference
word of warning if you go over your limit they will cut you again an you get very low speeds

VM only manage p2p traffic (torrents and newsgroups) during the evening on 50mbit so if you are downloading during the day your speed shouldn't be affected.

I had exactly the same problem as you when i first got 50mbit and it was solely down to my router. It could handle 20mbit just fine but as soon as I upgraded to 50mbit it wouldn't go over 25.

All was sorted when I bought a new wireless n router which could handle 300mbit wired. (i never ever bothered with the router VM sent me).

Are you using london server? Aberdeen can only handle 20
