What exactly is the throttling policy on 50 meg?

I am trying to decide if it is worth upgrading to 50 meg. I'm fed up of the traffic shaping on 10 meg. I don't need more speed, I just want the speed I paid for.

Looking at the page on throttling (here) it seems like 50 meg doesn't get it, except that they then say that it does get throttled here. They also say they throttle P2P and newsgroups.

On the latter page what do "peek times" and "high" upload usage actually constitute? How badly do they retard P2P and newsgroups? What about ordinary HTTP downloads? What about file sharing services like MegaUpload or RapidShare?

Is it worth upgrading even though they still throttle you? It is hard to configure your router and software when the speed can change whenever VM feel like it. I would move to another ISP but I can only get ~2Mb from ADSL so I am basically forced to stay with VM.

The traffic shaping for P2P and newsgroups is exactly the same on all tiers.

If you are in an area that has had the upload upgrade the there will be upload traffic management between 3pm-8pm. Usage allowance 6000MB upload then 65% reduction for 5 hrs (back to speed before upgrade).

Well not quite... back to 1.75Mb slightly more than pre upgrade speed hence the 65% and not 75% like other tiers

Where do you get 3pm-8pm? The site mentions that P2P retardation runs to midnight.

1.75 is the pre upgraded speed. Allowing you to hit 1.5 just like 53 down.

That's the upload STM for when you have the upgraded upload.

Yup a lot of people never realised their modems were provisioned for 1.75 pre upgrade so that speed test sites would show 1.5 up.

No-one will see 5Mb on speed test sites due to the overheads. More like 4.6-4.7
