Uncollected NTL Samsung Box SMT-2100C Should i expect a storage fee

I have had a NTL Box for over 6 years now which they have never been bothered to collect even though in the period i have been back to them as a customer. Should i be expecting some sort of storage fee from them because as i believe i am still expected to keep the equipment for them and could actually be charged if they requested it back and i could not supply it. Has anyone been through the route of trying to claim such a fee and if so as to what success. I am considering a small claims action due to the low cost of implementing it.

If you no longer want to keep the box then take it to the local tip as they will have an electronic recycling area or call up on 0845 454 1111 and ask for a returns packaging pack to be sent out to your property.

I would not hold your breath with regards getting any storage fees from them either.

The question isn't as daft as it sounds. Giving notice of your intention to start charging a fee for storage is a good way of getting a company to come and retrieve its property from your premises. I have friends who have successfully used this tactic to get a certain well-known supplier of LPG to remove their unwanted tank from the grounds of their hotel.

The power of it though is that you give fair notice of your intention to start levying a charge, which is then enforceable in Court. The company knows this and acts swiftly to prevent the liability from arising. The chances of you successfully extracting a charge from them without first giving notice are at best extremely thin, IMO.

Your charge would also need to be proportionate to the value of storage. Realistically a STB stuck in an unwanted corner of a house would be a negligible amount.

However I would take an oppostie route. Simple notice that they have 14 days to make firm arrangements for collection, or the goods will be disposed of with no further liability accepted. Only at that point would I then take it to the household tip.
