Suu Kyi finally free.

Just heard this on BBC and Sky news.

Quote:

Burma's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, under house arrest for seven years, has been freed by the country's military rulers.
The BBC have yet to update their site.

For the record: she's been under house arrest for 15 out of the past 20 years.

Ms Suu Kyi, who has been detained for 15 of the last 21 years, may not accept a conditional release if it excludes her from political activity.
Not necessarily house arrest.

It good news, I hope they don't find a reason to put her back under house arrest.

Excellent news but unfortunately it is just a PR stunt by the government. Like the incident with the American before, they'llseize any oppotunity on trumped up charges to bang her up again. If they don't have any they'll just make some up.

It's not necessarily a PR stunt, as her house arrest was due to end today. The fact that the 'elections'* were scheduled closely before her release. No doubt they'll find a reason to detain her again shortly.

*25% of the seats are reserved for the military under a constitution that requires a 75% majority to be changed. That's regardless of the fact that most 'parties' are closely linked to the military.

she should just flee into any embassy thats still open in Burma to make sure she doesnt get locked up again.

15 years of either prison or house arrest would drive me insane.

If I'm not mistaken she has always been free to leave the country. She would be unable to get back in though.
