i don't know what settings to put in for my router
Hi guys, i bought a router from ebay, the netgear wnr2000. I've currently got an older wireless g router. Anyway the original router set it self up when i connected it, it found all the settings, for ip, ip subnet, and the other 3, i can't remember them, i think they are preffered dns etc. Anyway i connected the new router up and put the installation cd in the pc. It then asks for all these figures, which i just don't know. I hooked the old router back up and went to the admin page to find the settings that it used. I connected the new router up and then put the figures in, and then tried to carry on, but it goes through and then says it can't complete because there is a problem with the details i put in. Does anybody know what figures i should put in for it to work

Re: i don't know what settings to put in for my router
When you change the device that is connected to the cable modem, you will need to power cycle the modem. Thus every time you swap the router, you must power cycle the modem.
If the router is set up correctly it should pick up the settings needed to connect to the cable modem automatically. If you have been fiddling about without much success, follow the procedure described in the router manual to reset to factory then power everything off then start with the modem on, then router, then PC. It shouldn't be necessary to use a CD install for a router on cable. I've never needed one. Start with the router connected wired via ethernet to the PC. Then set up the wireless passwords and security though your browser (internet explorer). You should be able to access the router's admin and config screens by browsing to: http://www.routerlogin.com user: admin and password: 1234 assuming you have done the factory reset correctly. |

Rob, thanks alot. I thought i had been powering down etc. But it's been so long before i set up a router i forgot that it had to be in order, and i have the router and modem on the same plug socket. But hey presto i did it in the right order and it worked perfectly, now i just need to get a new wireless n adaptor for my xbox 360
