how can i tell if network is open or not?

I have just set up my Virgin wireless router and would like to know if the network is open or not.

The security type that i have set the router to is WEP.

Is that the right type to set it up to as dont want other people using my wireless network for free.

WEP is easily cracked, if the devices on your network support it, then go to WPA-PSK or WPA-PSK2.

I have a D-Link DIR-615.
