Set Up Correct?

Hi People,

I have Sky Broadband and currently have the free sagem wireless router that comes with it. I have now purchased a Edimax Wireless 802.11n Gigabit Broadband Router, However due to this not having a phone line socket I am using my sky router as a modem and have my new edimax router set up through a lan socket off of my sky router and into the wan socket on my edimax router, is this set up correct?

Thanks

Re: Set Up Correct?

The main problem with having two routers chained like this is that both devices have a DHCP server running to hand out IP addresses. This will probably not work reliably, if at all.

The answer is to disable DHCP in the new router so that it simply becomes a switch. Allow IP address control to reside in the sky router and use the new device simply to enable extra connections.

Are you going to be using the gigabit functions of the new router if not maybe a hub would have been simpler. As DaiNasty says you could run into some real problem by chaining them together but worth while if you can get them to coexist happily.

I tried it once with a Cat, Dog and 2 Large Iguana's it ended badly. I now have goldfish :D

Thanks for the replies.
However I am not looking to have these together I really only want the Edimax Router as it supports 802.11n. However due the edimax router not being able to take in the telephone line I am not sure what to do or what I need?

Please Help??

Exchange the Edimax for an ADSL router, the one you have is designed for cable broadband, an ADSL model will have the input on it that you need.

As to the two DHCP server problem, it may or may not be a problem, if the Sagem has a "modem only mode" it'll disable the router section of the Sagem. However if this is not possible, you'll also end up with a "double NAT" situation, which could give you a headache when it comes to port forwarding etc.

Do you know if the Edimax can be set to Access Point mode only? If so then connect the ethernet cable between a lan port on the Sky router and a lan port on the Edimax and then you should be all up and running. Also turn off wireless on the Sky router.
