Obtaining a new virgin ip address.
 

Hello Folks

Not too sure if this is the place to put this thread (i am sorry if it is!) Now i've got a little problem with my ip address and i am wondering if someone can help me out.

For some reason it seems that website that i go onto (A popular webcasting site) has put enforced an ip block on me and i am trying to change my ip number because of this so i can fully access the site again.

Now in my current set up i have a PC wired into a linksys router and i also have a netbook connected to the same router via wlan,i have tried to down power everything down and then powering everything back up again to try and obtain a new ip number but everytime i do so it keeps giving me the same ip address.

But if i wire the modem directly into the pc it does give me a new ip number but that is no good if i want to do things on my netbook.
So i wondering if i got myself another router would i get a new ip number issued to me OR would the ip number that my current router gets be re-issued?

Or is there an easier way of getting my current router to obtain a new address? Any help would be gladly appreciated!

If you're on cable just change the MAC address on the router then reboot the router and modem and as long as there are spare addresses in the area it will give you a new one (this is why the PC got a different IP as it has a different MAC.)

Your cable modem/virgin leases you an IP address based on the MAC address of the equipment directly connected to the cable modem, that's the reason why connecting your PC to the modem gave you a different address(the PC's network card has a different MAC to the router).

Yes getting a new router would probably give you a new IP address, although it may be easier to log into your router and use the "clone" facility, if one exists on your router, either enter the MAC address of your PC's network card, or just change the router's MAC address by one character.

Your PC's MAC address can be found by running the command "ipconfig /all" at a command prompt, it's the combination of letters and numbers that is on the line "physical address".

Hi kimmy thanks for that, i just went into my router's settings andi could not see how to change the MAC address of the router BUT i was able to clone my pc's MAC address is that going to cause any issues?

And i thought dsl was cable and adsl was BT chris? thanks anyway lol :P

It depends on the router.. Some have a changeable mac address others do not.. No idea about "clone PC mac" as that in essence should give two identical MAC's on the network which shouldn't though internal and extrenal MAC's are kept seperate by NAT so I suppose it would work ;)

Changing your PC's MAC address will have no effect at all, as your behind a router the Virgin network doesn't see anything behind it.

Just an update (thanks for the responses :) ) After cloning the mac address of my pc in the router my ip number has now changed :D

Not about changing the PC NIC's MAC ;) Jon, some routers don't have an option to specify the router MAC, instead they have an option to change the WAN port MAC to the same as the PC attached (was needed back in the early days when NTL used to lock modems to the PC's MAC)

That is a very good point, but i shall get myself a new router soon anyway so i guess my ip will change once again ;)

My netgear (and others) will allow you to change the WAN MAC to anything you want..

You gotta ask yourself though that if you keep getting banned then you are doing something wrong and eventually they just instigate a subnet ban which will ban you and a lot of others...

Also remember that all sites are private and do have owners, if they want you off the site then you shouldn't really be arguing ;)

Well you have a very good point there kimmy,i got banned off the site (which is justin.tv btw) all because i was having a laugh and did something which some people got offended by and i've got to say getting naked on cam with a bass guitar was fun at the time, but i truly think i have learned my lesson now :)
