Coordinated Strikes - Illegal or not?

I keep hearing on the news that coordinated strikes are illegal. I can't link to video but here's one in print:

Quote:

Any co-ordinated strike against the cuts is almost as inconceivable as it would be illegal.
But unions seem quite blatant about threatening coordinated strike action:

Bob Crow says:

Quote:

As well as setting out plans for our own co-ordinated industrial and community action we also send a message of solidarity to our comrades in France, Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Spain and elsewhere who are fighting similar cuts to jobs, standards of living and public services,' he added.

As I understand it, the workers have to have a legitimate dispute against their own employer. Since the matters at issue are similar throughout the public sector (pensions, cuts, pay etc.), it may be possible for unions to undertake co-ordinated action across the sector but each dispute must be genuine and technically separate - sympathy strikes are out.

Ahh, that does make a bit more sense.
