Google Liquid Galaxy..

Nope, it's not another free product from google (although the parts google actually supply are free).

A couple of googlers came up with a system called "Liquid Galaxy" to enable people to explore the earth in a slightly more immersive environment than the average PC running Google Earth.

What they came up with was a system using 8 1080P 55 inch HD screens, connected to 8 servers, each running Google Earth and networked to each other. The who shebang is controlled by a "3d space controller" (essentially a Joystick that can be rotated as well) and a keyboard.

If you want to buy one? Well ,being Google, they open sourced all the software they used, so that is free, so if you have 8 relatively powerful PCs, 8 large 1080P HD screens and a nice fast network connection to Google (it's gonna use a serious amount of bandwidth to download all that image data), you can do it yourself.

Alternatively, there is a company that will build them for you. For $70 to $80k.

Re: Google Liquid Galaxy..

I don't see the point in this... it's effectively a super-expensive map? It doesn't give you anything that a normal PC running Google Earth doesn't give does it?

Or maybe I don't quite get the whole concept.... would be useful for playing games though :)
