It's English innit !!!

Emma Thompson has said she fears for the future of the English language - with young people's slang talk making them "sound stupid".

What do others think ?is the way young people talk just the next evolution of the language or are they lazy and stupid ?

She does have a point, even people have come on here and spoke in txt spk.

Which does make it very hard to read.

Lazy & stupid

There are very things which annoy me more than teenager from a fairly well-off family talking like they come from a particularly tough ghetto in Jamaica.

An important comment from Ms Thompson:

Quote:

She added: "There is the necessity to have two languages - one that you use with your mates and the other that you need in any official capacity."
This touches many of the same issues being discussed in the piercings/tattoos thread. We all live and move in different but neighbouring (often overlapping) 'communities'. When moving beyond our own immediate social circle we find we either have the skills to engage with the circle we move into, or we don't. Those that do, will successfully interact and gain as a result. Those that can't will be ignored or treated as an idiot.

It happens here on Cable Forum ... those that recognise we as a community prefer to be addressed in written English of reasonable quality (and not TXT SPK) tend to fit in, get the help they need etc. Those that insist on writing in text are usually ignored and sometimes asked to modify the way they are expressing themselves. If they do, great ... if they don't, they don't necessarily get as much helpful engagement from the community here as they might otherwise have done.

I don't really have a problem with some of the examples, text speak yes, but 'like' and 'innit' not so much. Obviously if you were in a professional setting you would need to consider how you speak and how your coming across. Sounding like a preppy American teenager is not a good look when your applying for a job.

However the way people converse socially is their business and language changes and evolves. Slang goes in and out of fashion. It's like so obviously not a problem, innit.

It will be interesting to see what happens in 40-50yrs time when all the kids have grown up ,will they still be talking "street" because that's all they know and will it become part of the official English language

I hate it, it disgusts me when I hear people young 'uns talking like that. Was in the chippy last week stood next to a young lad in a suit, when one of his mates walked in, trackies and everything, fisted each other () and said "Take time" - what on earth does this mean?!

Are people talking the same now as a hundred years ago? 200 years ago? Clearly not.

Languages change and develop, always have, always will. Many dictionary defined words in the English language are merely *******isations of others, just like "innit" et al anyway. Get over it.

I dislike that estuary type accent that a lot of UK rappers talk and allegedly sing, it is so damn annoying especially as you know they are putting the stupid voice on.

That's exactly what they do. they actually compete to see who can talk the worst.

if one thinks he's losing he'll start doing exaggerated arm movements as well as talking.

then they'll all limp home and mummy will give them a bath. school in the morning! :D

Why though ?,what makes the kids want to forceably change the way they speak naturally is it a way of proving they belong to a certain group or class of people or is it just a fashion
