There will be no revaluation of council tax bands in England during this Parliament, the government has pledged.

Good! Shame they didn't do that for business rates as well, one of my premises had its rates doubled this year with no warning or explanation :dozey:

Of course we only have Pickles's word that there was any such thing as State Snoopers, where is the proof?

True, it's not as though New Labour's reign was characterised by state interference, nannying etc. is it?.... ;)

They will want to increase the council tax as they are still smarting over the Poll Tax riots and them having to repeal it.

I sense an anti-Tory, still obsessed with Thatcher, who the current Conservative party don't even remotely resemble.

If it follows the welsh lead we could end up with increases in our council tax bills of £300 plus would you be happy with that.

Those were done by Labour, this coalition has ruled them out, so your post has no basis in fact and just comes across as a random poorly informed pop against the Conservative party.

I know you're unhappy about what happened in the 80s / early 90s but that was then and this is now.

Won't have most houses decreased in value since the last valuation?

Re: Council tax revaluation ruled out

No ... house valuations for council tax purposes are based on their value in 1991. The argument in favour of revaluation is that in the 20-odd years since, houses have not all increased in value at the same rate. Based on a 2010 valuation, some homes would go into a higher band while others would drop to a lower band. The argument against revaluation is the likelihood that more homes would move up a band or two than down one, resulting in hefty council tax increases for many people.

I have first-hand experience of this, and it's not pleasant. A house can be re-banded when it is sold; a few months after we bought ours we got a letter saying it was going up a band. They never visited as far as I'm aware, however a few nifty calculations revealed that they had pretty accurately extrapolated its 1991 value, allowing for inflation, from what we actually paid for it in 2005.

One reason it was pushed in Wales was to increase value for Right To Buy sales, putting many potential buyers off... but then again so did the sudden £16k limit on discounts.
