Computer to Stereo - RCA or Digital/Optical?

I'm not all that savvy with audio/stereo systems, so I'm asking here for some advice.

My stereo has the optical input port and my soundblaster Audigy card has (I believe) optical out

I've always used standard Stereo RCA plugs to go from computer to Stereo, so was wondering if it's worth "upgrading" to optical?

I did to link my laptop to my speakers (SoundWorks 2.1) and the quality is noticeably better, there can be no background hum, TOSLINK cables are thinner (but AVOID any sharp bends) and if your stereo supports 5.1 your computer can finally feed it that.
