Ethernet Switch Kit ?
 

Hi all

I am considering buying two of these are wireless in poor in my house.

Wondered if any one could receommend a make / model or give thier view on preformance / what is the typical cost ?

My package in 50mb

I am on Virginmedia ADSL, not cable, and I bought the Netgear FS605 recently as I had run out of ports on my Netgear Router.
The unit works fine, I have my HP printer connected to the switch by ethernet cable and all pc's print to it.

I bought mine from our local Pc World for £17.99 because I wanted it urgently but I suppose you can get them cheaper.

Ah, powerline adaptors. I'm with you now.

They apparently work very well. A friend of mine just bought this budget kit from eBuyer.

Would these be suitable for connection to a VM cable modem and, if so, how would they be connected to it?

Our PC is connected direct to the cable modem via an ethernet cable which is fine as we don't need to move it. If we wanted to be able to connect another PC/laptop to the internet would a single pair of these devices be enough? i.e. could we leave the PC connected by cable and use one plug to connect to the modem and the other to connect to the other device? Or would we need a plug to connect to the PC as well as any other device?

First thing you`d need to get (if you haven`t allready) is a router. The Modem only gives you 1 IP address so if you wanted to use more than one device you need a router to assign each pc/device it`s own private IP address.
You could put the router next to the modem and take a cable (RJ45 to RJ45) out of one of the LAN ports, plug it into the adapter and do the same at the other end plugged into the other computer.

You'll have to get alot higher than 85Mbps if you want to enjoy 50meg. The headline numbers are what you would get in an ideal situation. Id be looking at 200Mbps Only

Good point. I missed the mention of 50Mb. You're quite right as the 85Mb/s units will never come anywhere near that speed.

I've been using two Devolo dLAN 200 homeplugs on a single ring mains circuit for a while now and I've got to agree with everyone else, they work and they work well. Much better than wireless.
