Phorm

Are Virgin actually inflicting Phorm this on us now? I noticed I'm getting adverts on websites that relate to previous web browsing. Maybe coincidence but if they are using it how do I opt out ?

Phorm isn't happenning, but there are plenty of other predictive advertising things going on, often based around your own behaviour and cookies on your PC. Even google adsense is getting in on this http://adsense.blogspot.com/2009/03/...-ads-that.html

What you're describing is like phorm but done on a more remote level.. Remember when you visit a site it gets not only what you;re looking at but also your IP, any ads on the site can log the site page and your details, next site you visit if using the same ad software has that info at hand..

Do you ever sign in to any Google service on your PC? If you do, Adsense adverts are tailored to your previous browsing history.

I've just come across an opt out system for a number of these tracking cookies: http://www.networkadvertising.org/managing/opt_out.asp

mmm guess it might be, I was using google chrome. Maybe I'm being paranoid.

It was a halfords ad. The Mrs is threatening to buy a bike and she definetely doesn't need any more encouragement !

Interesting link Rob. I am relieved to see that I only had one tracking cookie installed from the listed companies. I wish there was an equivalent opt-out for companies that aren't part of the Network Advertising Initiative.
