WNR2000v2 and Steam

Anybody help me out here...
I had the old white netgear router. But that broke (completely). Now i have the new black WNR2000v2. This one works fine.
EXCEPT
Both have had a problem with loading the steam server list. They get to 600-900 servers and then it stops working. There should be over 50,000 servers. But the routers firewall/packet filtering stuff blocks it out because it thinks you're getting a DDOS. Im not the only one with the problem ive read on other forums.

I havent tried new firmware on this one yet (did on the other, didnt help). Can anybody help?
(Also a direct modem connection works fine)

This has been a long standing problem with Steam and some other games with lots of servers too, basically, your computer sends the request for the list and because the server details are returned by UDP instead of TCP there is no wait for an ACK (accept packet) in between sends so your router gets flooded at the full 100MBPS or whatever it happens to be causing some routers to fall over- otherwise you just don't get a full list, just bits and pieces.

Hope that makes sense :)

Okay, regardless of what VM say im going to try tomato firmware on this.
forgot to say, will it brick the router like the previous ones unless i do the thing to get around custom firmware upgrades?

I think the WNR2000v2 comes with standard Netgear firmware and sfaik it isn't supported by Tomato.

Just got the DD-WRT firmware, there is one for it.

Fair enough. It isn't on the list of Tomato supported devices though.

Yeah i know. I read somewere that it was supported by some weird beta version of tomato. I gave up trying to find the file for this router.
So i just went to DD-WRT

The only reason I say I think it has the standard Netgear f/w is because I think Masque posted that a while back.

I got one from VM when I was connected but I use Tomato on an old Buffalo router I bought on eBay (I don't use wireless so the lack of N on that one is immaterial). If I'd realised it was supported by DD-WRT I may well have just tried that.

I can now happily say that DD-WRT firmware is 10x better than standard Netgear and i can connect to all the game servers!
<3 Custom Firmware.

Anybody who needs the file : http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downl...-WNR2000v2.chk

1) Go to 192.168.1.1
2) Login
3) Go to update
4) Browse > Select the file
5) Wait for it to update then go to 192.168.1.1 and enter your desired user+pass
Enjoy!

Result.

As Tomato is based on DD-WRT I guess there will eventually be a version for it. I think I'll stick with Tomato on the Buffalo for now - I like the Tomato eye-candy :)

Dang it, had my hopes up for a minute there. WNR2000 V1 user here, so no DDWRT for me :(
