is it worth getting an amp? with hdmi connections...

my laptop has hdmi and xbox, so want sound to come from speakers which i have connected to the tv....alternatively if i have speakers which connect to the optical inputs...then i dont have to worry about an amp right? any sound will come out the speakers...

im a newbie when it comes to sound.
