New graphics card needed - any suggestions?
Hi folks. My graphics card has died (RIP graphics card, you’ll be sorely missed), and I’m looking for some suggestions for a replacement.
The card that’s now sadly no longer with me is an Nvidia 8800GTS. The pc is a three year old Mesh machine, 2.4 quad core, with a P5N-E mb, and a 550 PSU. As the machine is now three years old, and I’ll be replacing it with something better (and shinier!) sometime in the next six to nine months, I’m not looking for anything cutting edge – or too expensive! The pc is used mainly for PSE, and the occasional blast at Call of Duty. If anyone has any suggestions, I’d be very grateful. Thanks in advance.:) |
Re: New graphics card needed - any suggestions?
Get yourself on Ebay and pickup a second hand 8800 GT for £40 or an 8800GTX for £50, or if your board supports then get 2 in SLI mode. Newer GPU's wont offer you much difference unless you have a large monitor (24" and above). If the 8800GTS did you well then the 8800GT or GTX will be a nice next step for next to no money at all.

if you are gonna spend £40 on a second hand card then spend £46 on a new one perhaps?
http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/101706...d/Product.html although this card is low end its 2 generations newer and should perform well ---------- Post added at 11:33 ---------- Previous post was at 11:27 ---------- mind you looking there are some good 8800 series cards on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/XFX-NVIDIA-GeF...item2308581aa5 this one looks a fair enough deal ---------- Post added at 11:48 ---------- Previous post was at 11:33 ---------- This thread has done my head now. I am sorely tempted to purchase a 8800GT and use it as a hybred physx card |
Re: New graphics card needed - any suggestions?
Thats whay I use! 8800GT is an awesome card, it was the first G92 chipset and comes very close to the performance of the GTX although it doesnt quite overclock as well. I use an 8800GTX as a primary card with an 8800GT as a secondary for Physx and folding. It handles anything thrown at it in 1920x1240 res on a 24" monitor... and all for peanuts compared to ATI 5*** or Nvidia 4**.

Re: New graphics card needed - any suggestions?
Thanks for the replies. I've dedcided to try one of the 8800 cards on Ebay. As long as it works until I get my new pc, and can pass the old one on, I'll be chuffed! :)

Re: New graphics card needed - any suggestions?
I was the same when I got my GTX 480, I just wanted to get it installed and play some game's but had to take out my watercooled GTX 280 which sadly is now sat on the side not being used.
I heard that the 8800GT's the newer version's were very good on there own and even better in sli, so they are very good cards and you should enjoy it as iirc they perform a little better than the old 8800gts's. |
Re: New graphics card needed - any suggestions?
There was not a G80 core 8800GT there was only the GTS and GTX.
The revision was based on the G92 core which had iirc a GT and a GTS version |
Re: New graphics card needed - any suggestions?
Oh right I thought they had made a newer version of it with better core's etc, but bit of info for me there cheer's zing.
