Homeplugs? Which Are The Best And How Much Should You Pay?

Helloooooooooo all

I am considering setting up an enhanced home networking system using Homeplugs Ethernet adaptors. I already have a wireless system but the Blu-Ray Player cannot connect for BD-Live and Firmware updates owing to the fact it is not wireless enabled.

Best option seems to be homeplugs via ethernet cables. Now, what type should I use? What speeds? 85mbps or 200mbps? and how much should I pay?

Prices vary between £60 up to £150, so I dont want to overspend.

Any comments would be most welcome.

Presumably you mean homeplug via the powerlines rather than ethernet?

I can't really comment on the best ones, as I've only tried one brand. What I can say is the following. I've got a pair of 85Mbps Devolo homeplugs. They are rock solid, and as far as I know, Devolo is one of the better brands out there. I'd definitely recommend them. You need to be wary of the stated speeds though. My 85mbps plugs achieve a realistic throughput of about 15 mbps, and I know other have the same experience. So, if you want decent speeds/future proofing. I'd go for the 200mbps. I don't know what throughput they achieve, but it's got to be better than 15 mbps.

One other thing to consider is that you can also get combined homeplug/wireless access points. Basically, this means that you go over the power lines where needed and have a wireless network (as well as ethernet plug) at the other end. Mine have this, and it's the best of both worlds if you ask me. You also need to consider what the actual speed on the wireless connection is though.

Home plugs are fine for getting you out of a scrape but if you have the option instead of installing ethernet then stick with that. It'll be reliable and upgradable to gigabit... Only use PLA's if you have to
