e8400 gets a passmark score of 2,197 So the q9400 is in theory almost twice as fast. In practice this could work out far less than or even occasionally more than twice as fast. This is because the Q9400 has 4 cores and the e8400 only has 2. So for a game to work faster on a 4 core processor it needs to be written to utilise all 4 cores (More games come out every week that do) whereas most current games already support 2 cores. Personally I would and recently did go for a quad core over a dual core, because even if your current games/apps don't support it, odds are future ones will. Out of interest what are you upgrading from? |
Re: which chip?
Hi
CPU Intel Core 2Duo E650 (over clocked to 3.5 ) my son needs a new chip in his mainboard so i thought he could have my old one and i get a new upgrade :-) Would i see much performance increase? |

According to the passmark website there is about a 33% performance increase from the e6550 to the e8400 though this is at stock speeds and yours is quite heavily overclocked. I think You will notice it but Im not sure its worth the £149.99 price tag. Though if you are upgrading to a quad core at least you could call it an investment ;) Here's the passmark link for common CPUs and their scores if you are interested. http://www.cpubenchmark.net/common_cpus.html |

You have a E6550 overclocked to 3.5 is this correct? Your son needs a new CPU in his mobo whats wrong with the old chip? what cpu is it? Would you see much of a difference if you upgrade to one of the cpus in post 1? Going from a E6550 to an E8400 wouldnt be a worthwhile upgrade going from a E6 to a Q9 cpu would be if you do a lot of multitasking or use multi threaded application. You also need to bare in mind if your system was built when the E6 cpus were new then it may not be compatible with an E8 or Q9 cpu Now if you were to have said go from an E6 to an i5/7 then that would be a different story but that would mean a whole new backbone |
Re: which chip?
its a E6750 me bad and overclocked to 3.5
About a year ago i upgraded my system and what i have left over is abit ip35 pro 4gb of ram a graphic card The E6750 was put in my new mainboard Asus P5Q-E so no chip for the abit board. But now i have some money so was going to buy a new chip and put the old one in the abit board. |
Re: which chip?
go onto the asus site then and see what cpu the board takes. I had the P5Q pro running a q9450 though so you should be sorted
