Connecting two wireless routers
 

Hi All, I have virgin media broadband 20 mg and have a wireless router. i want to extend the signal around the back of the house and into the garden and reading up on the different forums i think this is possible by connecting another router hardwired to the first.


the first router is a belkin wireless router F5D8236-4 v3000 which i access by typing in 192.168.2.1

I have now purchased a buffalo WHR-G300N V2

I also have a sam knows vm monitor in the setup just to complicate matters.

Could some one tell me if this is possible or guide me through the setup process, i understand i have to physically change one of the ip addresses
at the moment
the belkin one is 192.168.2.1
the buffalo one is set by default at 192.168.11.1

i would like both routers to be able to use the wireless capability if possible as the kids use iphones/psp around the whole house.

I suspect the second router, the buffallo, which you want to use to extend wireless coverage should be used as an access point rather than as a router.

Connect a PC to the second router only. Now set the second router's IP. If the belkin router uses an IP of 192.168.2.1 then you should set the IP of the buffalo to an IP in the same range i.e 192.168.2.xxx - you might want to reserve that Ip in nthe Belkin router to avoid a conflict. Switch off DHCp in the buffalo. Disconnect PC from second router and power off router

Now connect the two routers. Use the LAN ports to connect cables between the routers (not the WAN port). Power up your network.

You should now be able to browse to the admin panels of both routers using their own IP addresss enabling you to configure anything else. If in doubt you'll have to check the manuals for both belkin and buffalo routers.

It might have been easier if your routers were both the same make.

Connect a ethernet cable between one of the 4 ports on the SamKnows trial router and put the other end in the second router's WAN (Internet port), then disable DHCP on the second router, and setup wireless security. It's best to keep the SSID's seperate I find, and operate each router on a different channel.
