Believe it or not, fraudsters can actually detect when a tab has been left inactive for a while, and spy on your browser history to find out which websites you regularly visit, and therefore which pages to fake.
I might be wrong, but I'd imagine you'd have to have some malware running on you're computer in order for them to do that. I'd be surprised (well annoyed rather) if a site in one tab can read the browser history and change the url on another tab.

so the lesson is when using online banking or any other security sensitive web site only open one tab at a time .would this also apply to multiple windows in your browser as opposed to multiple tabs ?

AFAIK, tabs are accessed just like separate Windows, which have been accessible via Javascript since forever

So you're saying that one tab can read/write the contents of another tab? That sounds very dodgy to me.

Newer versions of Firefox (and no doubt other browsers) have tightened up security so scripts running in one browser window, tab or even frame cannot access the contents of others that come from different domains, or even other parts of your computer, unless you change hidden security settings. Bloody annoying when you've created a user-friendly intranet site only to find your clever functions no longer work, I can tell you!

If you're talking about the avivraff.com page, it's altering the contents of its own tab (like National Rail's train info pages that update every two minutes and many download sites). It's not affecting the contents of another tab.

(Although I've been known to get it wrong before... ;) )

Nope, testing the general premise :) It's all quite good fun really.
