Router issue
 

trying to reset password etc for wireless router,
tried 192.168.1.1to gain access to change required fields, but will not connect to page.
windows picks up problem with local connection and cannot repair it.
Any suggestions as how to get past this.

Are you trying to do this with a wired or wireless connection? Wired is often easier for troubleshooting purposes. If in doubt power everything off for say 30 seconds and then power up modem let settle, router let settle and finally PC. Your PC's network card will need to be enabled.

BTW I'll alter your post title, It will be meaningless to anyone else who might try to assist you ;)

To best get an answer I've moved your post to the correct section as it's nothing to do with VM internet but instead networking. I've also changed the title as no-one would know what the thread is about with your username as the title :)

You could have one of many routers, each of which might have different login details. If you have a working connected PC anywhere you can check the login address of the router by going to the network connections of the PC, and checking the connections details / status. The gateway address should be the login address you'd need for your rotuer.

But you have to have a working network connection - without that you will not be able to log in to the router's admin stuff or in fact do much else.

Is it just one PC having connection problems or are you unable to connect anything? If just the one then use a working PC to access the admin stuff.

If it is your only PC that won't connect then getting a wired connection first is the way forward. Is the network card on the PC installed and enabled (you might need to uninstall and reinstall drivers), and it set to autodetect for IP addresses? Try perhaps an alternative network cable.

If all else fails, most routers will allow you to restore to factory settings. You might need to read the manual for that but it will possibly be a small little button on the back that is depressed for a few seconds. Once on factory, a connection should be possible wired enabling you to login to admin and restore all your required security features.

i can get connected to the net both wireless and wired, the problem is that
the router connection comes through with my brothers name and password, and he lives 70 miles away from myself. i only found out about this when i went onto the net with my wii, it seems to be connecting to my router but i require his name and password.
Therefore i would like to change the router name and password.

Any idea of the make/model of the router.
Can you not get to the login screen for said router by typing the address in the address bar?

Try running a CMD (cmd in search box for 7/Vista, Start->Run type in cmd and press enter in XP) prompt and putting in ipconfig /all

This should give you the network details. As Rob mentioned above you are looking for the Default Gateway XXX.XXX.X.X
