no I never had any real issues with Vista ;)

run memtest on it first then check event viewer to see if it pinpoints a program thats hanging

perhaps back up and reset to factory defaults

memtest didnt find any errors or the event viewer how would you reset back to factory defaults?

Make and model of laptop please.

it's easier to be specific about reset options with that info.

Can you remember installing any software just before the lock ups started? Any recent windows updates (was it just after the second Tuesday of the month)?

If you say everything is fine when in Safe-Mode that would point to a software issue, possibly a driver or recent update conflicting.

Also what security software...

Re: windows vista home problem

Boot from Vista DVD
Select Repair Options
when it finds your Vista installation press next
When you are at the advanced options screen select Command Prompt
Navigate to C:\Windows\WinSxS

C: being the drive your Windows Vista is installed on, mine was on D: in command prompt

This is how

C: (Press Enter)
cd windows (Press Enter)
cd winsxs (Press Enter)

Now you should be at this screen

C:\Windows\WinSxS:>

type in here

del pending.xml (Press Enter)

Now restart, it showed me the update screen 1 more time but went past it to Welcome, then to desktop, with a couple of errors but got me my files back

you could download the VIsta repair cd image and create a bootable USB drive using Barts methods but I aint done it with Vista so dunno how you would invoke the cds auto run

You should be able to research it yourself on good old google

And... if its a modern Acer, and you dont care about loosing files i believe its ALT-F10 at boot screen to envoke full destructive recovery :p
