I'm so confused (settings for new mail)

I know and I've read the thread, but I'm still confused because nothing I'm doing is working.

I have Outlook 2007
@ntlworld.com email address

I understand there are issues with SPA, so I've unticked the SPA box, but put in all the other settings appropriately, and when I do the test email it goes for a full minute and times out. I get no error message it just times out. Incoming is fine, but outgoing just doesn't happen.

I've set all my settings back to the original ones for now and it seems to work, but obviously I need to change.

Can I just confirm that I'm doing the right thing on each 'page' of the setup or if there's something I'm missing?

Tools:
Account Settings:
(double click email account)
On the page that comes up the pop3 server and outgoing mail server:
pop3.ntlworld.com
smtp.ntlworld.com

Username - I didn't have @ntlworld.com there before - but I've added it now

I have NOT ticked the box for SPA as in the other threads.

Click 'More Settings'
General - just have email address in there
Outgoing server (smtp) requires autentication - ticked and use same settings as my incoming mail server
Connection - nothing changed (connect using LAN)
Advanced:
Incoming Server - 995
Tick - This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)
Outgoing server (SMPT) 465
Use the following type of encrypted connection - have NONE - should there be something different there?

With all of this it just 'hangs' at the test message sending. As I said, incoming is fine.

Should I just leave with previous settings for now?

Thanks in advance.

___edited to add

Actually I have no issues with them moving to the Google platform - I moved to gmail 3 years ago due to virgin/ntl email instability. But I just wish they'd have worked out the bugs first.

And to not have support for Outlook which is one of the most used email clients... That was a bit of an oversight :(

Re: I'm so confused (settings for new mail)

The number of times I've ended up reformatting (touches wood quickly) my OS or OE would refuse to even open or misbehave in general and I've just been faced with setting up OE all over again, I frankly got to the point where I couldn't be bothered anymore.

It was easier to stick to webmail and to forward my emails to my Gmail account.;)

Andrew, thanks, but according to this page http://www.virginmedia.com/help/emai...tingsother.php it's pop3.ntlworld.com

the second lot of settings you gave me was the virginmedia ones, and I'm ntlworld.

I can't get into the specific Outlook 2007 instructions - it just completely hangs my computer every time I try :(

Thanks for trying though.

Maggy I HATE webmail interface. Even though I use gmail as my main email addy I still download it into Outlook. I used Outlook Express/Windows Mail till I upgraded to Windows 7, then finally had to change to Outlook.

Thanks as well though :)

At the moment everything is still working fine with the original settings, but if someone else has an idea with the new ones I'm game for trying ;)

When you click on the "More Settings" button in your Outlook connection properties, make sure everything is unticked on the "Outgoing Server" tab.

This is because they have admitted that there is a problem with SMTP authentication on the smtp.ntlworld.com server with Outlook at the moment which they're trying to address. Presumably they will be able to sort it - smtp authentication works fine on the same port number on GMail, and since they're providing the mail service they should know what needs doing to fix it.

So, all unticked on "outgoing server" tab.

On the "Advanced" tab, SSL and port 465 for outgoing server

Select SSL for incoming server and it will auto-select the port number for the connection type you have have chosen (whether that's POP3 or IMAP)

If you do the above your test mail should go through without a problem.

Once they fix the smtp authentication issue for Outlook 2007, go back to the "Outgoing Server" tab and tick the "outgoing server requires eauthentication" box. If you aren't using the :recent option to connect to the POP server then you can tick the radio button for "use same setting as my incoming mail server".

P.S. the SPA option should be unticked now AND when they fix the SMTP authentication issue. They don't use it.

Thanks will try unticking that box (I think I've tried it that way before). I thought it was the box on the first page we had to leave unticked, so maybe got it backwards. Off to try

Sigh - got really excited there that it might work, but no joy - still hangs and times out :(

Worth a go :( Will wait a few days and see if there's any news on a fix.

Thanks for trying :)

Yup, that SPA box needs to be unticked on the "Internet Email Settings page" when you have your name and log-in information.

But you also have to make sure you don't have anything ticked on the "Outgoing Server" tab until they fix the Outlook issue.

Once they fix it and require it to connect, you go back to that tab and tick the top box, and then either the first or secoind radio button depending on whether you're using the "recent:name@ntlworld.com" format to access your POP incoming mail. If you aren't you tick the first button, if you are you tick the second button and put in "name@ntlworld.com" and you password.

But you will still leave the SPA box unticked on there as well I believe.

D'oh!!! YES - got it. Didn't change the dropdown box to SSL - I hadn't seen that option in the box. Once I did that all is well :)

THANK YOU!!!!

Ooh, and thanks for the note about the SPA being unticked both now and later. It's ticked in my 'gmail' settings so I assumed that was one of the new things we'd need to have checked.

You're a star. Thanks for getting me sorted :)

Excellent. Glad to have got you sorted.

All will be well until they fix the Outlook/SMTP authentication issue and change the server-side settings to demand a connection with authentication.

At that point you will notice that you fail to connect and will have to go to the "outgoing server" tab and select "My Outgoing Server requires authentication", but that's the only change you will need to make unless you use the "recent:" function so that you can get emails delivered to both Outlook and other/phone clients etc.

Funnily enough, I don't have it ticked in my GMail settings and it connects to send and receive without any problem.

I've said now and later because they show it as unticked in the help pages (when they're working!).

If you ever find you're not connecting it would be worth going back to those pages to check if they've changed that, although hopefully they would email us to advise of the change.

Well thanks again. No I don't use the 'recent' setting - if i'm away I use webmail.

Hmm- I'll have to check that out with gmail. Those settings have just followed me through 2 computers and 3 email clients.

And yes, having help pages that actually connect would be helpful! LOL
