A Pablo Picasso painting has set a new record for the most expensive art work sold at auction, fetching $106m (£70m).
The Spanish artist's 1932 picture Nude, Green Leaves and Bust was sold at Christie's auction house in New York.
Recession? What recession?

Seems the financial meltdown hasn't affected some people at all. :erm:

Wish I got that much for my paintings :D

The thing with the Art World is that certain areas are driven by the investment potential rather than any aesthetic consideration. Unmade beds and house bricks come to mind. I doubt whoever bought this Picasso obtained it solely to treasure for it's artistic qualities, they bought it knowing that it would increase in value at a greater rate than most other non-speculative investments in their portfolio.

Having said that I do like this painting, shame it was out of my price range it would have looked good in my sitting room. :)

You could always look for an art print of it and blow the £70m on something else. (Shoes? :D)

Art print, shudder. :D

........ now shoes as an art form, I wonder if my accountant would accept them as an investment item in my Retirement Portfolio? I did make a profit selling some 1980's Mary Quant boots a couple of years ago. :)

The striking work of Picasso's muse and mistress Marie-Therese Walter has been exhibited in the United States only once, in 1961 in Los Angeles to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Picasso's birth. The painting, which measures more than 5 feet by 4 feet, shows a reclining nude figure with an image of Picasso in the background looking over her. The painting had belonged to the late California art patron Frances Lasker Brody, who bought it in the 1950s. It had been kept in her family since then.
I very much doubt if there is an available print of this picture anywhere.:erm:

For a Picasso that is not a bad painting as many tend to look like they were done by a monkey.:D

Well you should view his pre Cubism period. You would be very surprised at how well he could draw and paint. He was a master by the time he was 14.

Oh I do know his art and he was brilliant, I just find his later paintings to be a step to far.

I love paintings by Salvador Dali as they are so surreal and the is so much to see in the majority of his art works.

well I think cubism was his way of staving off boredom.Imagine being so good at your craft at 14,so good that by the time you get to your late 20's you are so good you get bored. You look for something different..and some of his cubist efforts are very good.Look for the portrait of Ambrose Vollard.
