A 14-year-old sea cadet has died after falling overboard in the Solent.
The boy, from Kent, was on the training ship TS Royalist which was anchored at Stokes Bay south of Gosport, Hampshire.
He was climbing the rigging to bring in the sails when he fell 25ft (7.5m) into the sea on Sunday night. The crew retrieved him and sent a Mayday call.
My heart goes out the boy's mother.

Where was the safety line?

Mr Cornish said the boy would have been wearing a safety harness but the cadets did not wear life jackets when climbing the rigging in case they got tangled.

I'd hope it wasn't a wasted life. The cadet in question was obviously doing something he loved when he fell to his death.

Very well said. I feel so sorry for the young man's family and friends.

In echo of EOB's post.

A statement from his family said: "Jonathan was a wonderful son and grandson who tragically died whilst doing something that he loved.

So does this statement mean that no life jacket was worn (fair enough), but a safety harness was?

If so the harness failed big time. You can use a safety harness that wirks with rigging, i've seen it on TV

Report. Error of judgement. Sad.
