Is virginmedia switching all ntl accounts to gmail

If so im not happy about this. Google is well known for invasions of privacy and already with the buzz fiasco the last thing we need is to become part of it. does this mean all contacts will become open to the web, are we part of buzz by default. what privacy settings do we need to change.

I think you're getting confused between Googlemail and gmail. Although owned by the same people googlemail is known for spamming where as gmail is more private, domain based and doesn't have the same t&c's of the more public googlemail

I was sure they were the same thing. Do you have any ideas when the uprgade is likely to be complete.

Nope for legal trademark reasons Google can't use Gmail everywhere, other companies in some countries have the Gmail trademark already, and named the service Google Mail instead. Zero difference between them apart from that and the domains are interchangeable.

No, no and no respectively. They're outsourcing the mail to Google, not converting your mail into a free GMail box. You won't be part of Buzz, contacts won't be sent around the world and Google won't be serving you ads based on the content of your mails.

You'll be on Google Apps, not GMail.

I thought they sent you an email telling you about the options.

1 of the options is to keep your old ntlworld.com email as well as have the virginmedia.com one.

Actually it did not as your existing email addresses will remain as NTL addresses unless you delete them, except for your primary address which is permanent.

If you decide that you want another mailbox then that will be an @virginmedia.com email and you can have up to 10 email addresses on the new platform.

I know I work there, but your post made a great sounding board, hence the edit of it for other posters to read about it.;)

The other issue is that it blocks exe, reg and other attachments, even when zipped, so measures would be needed if you wanted to send a reg tweak to a friend (actually, that is a simple one, send as TXT and advise to rename it.

If there was an opt-out of this "protection", I would - I already filter attachment posts to a seperate folder, for additional caution, and I can see legitimate uses for sending exe, such as a portable presentation.

Oh well, maybe they don't count 7Z as "zipped".

WinRar also works for sending .exe files.
