From the Guardian:
Quote:

The service will have hundreds of films for online viewing, at £3.99 for a new release. The films will be available to watch streamed via a PC for a 48-hour rental period. Users of the service do not have to be Virgin Media customers.

Since my post this morning I have found the following on The Register

Quote:

Virgin Media Online Movies is a pure rental play for now, with new releases available at £3.99. Older titles cost less, depending on the film. The service is available to anyone in the UK who has a broadband connection - you don't have to be a VM customer. Launch line ups include Fantastic Mr Fox, District 9 and, from 6th May, Twilight New Moon.

Am I right in assuming this latest offering will tie in with the new TiVio?

Shucks, beaten to it by Spectato. :D

Hehe, from the thread title it sounds as if Virgin have launched the first online Movie service available anywhere - sorry to be a pedant :) I've also read that the movies will be available for 48 hours from bought - I wonder if that will make it across to Virgin's own Flimflex service (that's only 24 hours isn't it?).

Well I did lift the thread title from VMs own press release so pedant away to your heart's content. Maybe they are going to release another more supa dopa online movie service later on. :D

I wonder if this will be entirely separate to Virgin's Filmflex service. It would be nice if things like the 48 hour rental make it across (I believe it's only 24 hours rental on Filmflex isn't it?).

Post now deleted (though too late for it to be quoted for posterity) :) Yes, I now think the thread title makes sense considering this part of the forum only deals with Virgin news.

They just need to work out some kind of deal with Xbox live and/or PSN now, similar to the yanks Netflix deal

I was wondering when one of the big boys would launch a service like this in the UK, seems like there are so many in the US and that we were lagging behind. Sure would be nice to get this on to PS3/360/Wii and netenabled TVs.

at that price ?

Re: Virgin Media launches first online movies service

Well I don't even use FilmFlex or Zune on the 360, I just either buy the bluray or wait till it is on Sky movies. But the service has to start somewhere and if there is no other serious competitor out there then VM can set what price they like.

The service will be open to all not just Virginmedia customers.

Re: Virgin Media launches first online movies service

a netflix type service would be good, I cannot understand why virgin are doing this. Lovefilm is a cheaper way of doing it, surely the fact they are not sending out dvd's means they could do some sort of £8.99 per month for 5/6 rentals and a larger £15.99 for 10/12, instead of £3.99 per film, also if they used this model instead of filmflex more people would sign up and it could eventually rival Sky movies because you can watch the film when you want.
