POP3 vs IMAP4

Hi all,

just found out that the old ntlworld email domain has IMAP4 server. I now access my email via laptop, desktop and smartphone. Would it be more advantageous for me to now use the IMAP server rather than POP (although I don't quite understand the exact logistics behind it)

POP moves the emails from the server

IMAP keeps the emails on the server, so you have a back up.

Personally use google mail and forward all my mail from ntl to it, just a personal choice.

Use Imap settings with it

The space on the VM servers is relatively small, so you can fill it up very easily especially with a few attachments when using IMAP, POP3 however downloads the entire content of each email and usually deletes the emails from the server.

thanks for all the advice and this leads me onto my next point, when will the ntlworld platform be migrated to google? I am assuming this will elleviate the space problems?

Very soon, and yes it will give more space. I think migration is due to start over the next few weeks, but will take a few months to complete.

And hopefully IMAP will work! I've been trying to use it with my ntlworld.com account off and on for a while and I get fed up with Outlook constantly complaining about server timeouts eventually putting itself offline.

I presume noone has any issues with Google's service? I'll probably just end up setting up some sort of forwarding to my (rarely used) Gmail account.

I can report IMAP works fine with Outlook 2007. Am using it now. Not convinced it is the way forward though owing to the current platform restricions space wise

You can keep the e-mails on the server with POP3 - just untick the delete option in your mail client.
