POP3 vs IMAP4
Hi all,
just found out that the old ntlworld email domain has IMAP4 server. I now access my email via laptop, desktop and smartphone. Would it be more advantageous for me to now use the IMAP server rather than POP (although I don't quite understand the exact logistics behind it) |

IMAP keeps the emails on the server, so you have a back up. Read more here. |
Re: POP3 vs IMAP4
Personally use google mail and forward all my mail from ntl to it, just a personal choice.
Use Imap settings with it |
Re: POP3 vs IMAP4
The space on the VM servers is relatively small, so you can fill it up very easily especially with a few attachments when using IMAP, POP3 however downloads the entire content of each email and usually deletes the emails from the server.

Re: POP3 vs IMAP4
thanks for all the advice and this leads me onto my next point, when will the ntlworld platform be migrated to google? I am assuming this will elleviate the space problems?

Re: POP3 vs IMAP4
And hopefully IMAP will work! I've been trying to use it with my ntlworld.com account off and on for a while and I get fed up with Outlook constantly complaining about server timeouts eventually putting itself offline.
I presume noone has any issues with Google's service? I'll probably just end up setting up some sort of forwarding to my (rarely used) Gmail account. |
Re: POP3 vs IMAP4
I can report IMAP works fine with Outlook 2007. Am using it now. Not convinced it is the way forward though owing to the current platform restricions space wise
