Greater Manchester policemen jailed for 'cruelty'

Quote:

Two policemen have been jailed for 18 months after inflicting "deliberate cruelty" on a 19-year-old woman in custody in Manchester.
Pc Jason Hanvey, 37, and Sgt Andrew Kennedy, 51, showed "appalling and inexcusable conduct" at Collyhurst police station in 2008, a jury heard.

Seems a shameful note to end a career on..I cannot fathom why the Sgt didn't intervene. :erm:

probably because he is of the same character,
unfortunately this type of incident just gives the people who think the police are the **** of the earth a bit more ammo

Judge Gee said to the pair: "During the time we have had together I have detected in neither of you not one hint of remorse or regret for what happened that night.
"In the witness box you sought to justify what you did in what I regard as an arrogant fashion."
Anyone know why she was in custody for?

Miss Keigher had been arrested in Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester city centre on suspicion of assault and was later charged.

Reading that article, it appears as though this was the tip of a very large iceberg.

Nor me - people like this give the 99% of decent cops a bad name.

There is no excuse for their behaviour. Regardless of the situation they should have carried out their duties to the point of the law, by not doing so they ended up on the wrong side of it. Luckily for the girls involved the tape wasnt "misplaced", unlucky for the 2 numpties that got a bit of bird.

Having been on the receiving end of a copper being overly agressive (back in the day when no one had rights other than the police) nothing could have been done in my case, my solicitor was told by the duty sargent to "drop it" after I made a complaint (1981) I have no sympathy for people in positions of power that abuse it for whatever reason.

Both got exactly what they deserve. Police are there to stop bullying, not contribute to it.

It'll be interesting to see if they release the CCTV footage in the future.

*dons flame-proof suit*

Whilst there is no excuse for assaulting prisoners in custody I think there might be more to this than meets the eye. I reckon there will be more information coming out in the coming months.

More to this, in like she deserved it in some kind of way?

Nope. I'm sure she wasn't just standing around quietly but there is not excuse for assaulting a handcuffed prisoner.

I was more thinking of more cops being done for on-going issues.

The police refused to release the CCTV footage of the incident to the media, "to ensure future disciplinary hearings are not compromised".
I did wonder about that..but I can't see how there could be any future hearings if they were the only two..or were there other incidents shown about other police working in the same station?Or is it a handy way of keeping it off YouTube?

As you say Derek it may be there is more to be revealed.

Also they were charged with misconduct rather than assault. Restraining prisoners can and does cause pain and looks bad on camera, see the last few police brutality threads on here for proof of that, but does need to happen.

Could it be part of a wider investigation into lying etc.

He had already been done for a similar offence 12 years ago see below, so you wonder how many times has he got away with it during the preceding 12 years as a leopard cannot change its spots..

Quote:

Hanvey, of Dukinfield, hit a male suspect in the face in similar circumstances at another police station 12 years ago, the court heard.
He was convicted of assault by magistrates in Manchester, but was allowed to keep his job because of previous good character.
