Rugby player dies after 44 years in hospital

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/south_east/8597387.stm

I know I am too young to remember the actual event, as it happened the year I was born. The reason I remember it is my mothers side of the family was from Rugby Warwickshire. The husband of my grandmothers sister was in Stoke Mandeville hospital on the same ward as Roger Addison.

My relative was also paralysed following an accident where a large transformer dropped from a crane onto his legs. He eventually came home but was in bed for at least 15 years before he died.

I remember as a kid that my relatives from Rugby visiting Roger in hospital, I guess it must have been Rookwood.

Very sad, but also surprising that he defeated the odds for so many years.

44 years !!!

Totally paralysed from the neck down, able only to whisper..

Personally I'd rather have died on the day.

So would I. He probably cursed the Doc who saved him on the day. At least now he's out of his pain and misery.

I'm glad I talked this sort of thing through with my family. They all know that if I end up in hospital again I'm DNR, and if they get to the hospital to find me on life support they are to turn me off....

Sorry to hear your not well. What is DNR. I'm not sick but if by any chance that anything happens to me and the docs need to revive me I told them dont and just switch of the machines. My brother was brought out of a semi coma and for the 7yrs he lived he hated every min of it and I think he would also have been very happy if they had not brought him back

I have a Living Will laying out quite clearly what if any medical intervention should be attempted to prolong my life. As well as the main document held by my husband there is a copy lodged with my Solicitor. I just hope that if the Will ever needs to be used the Medical Profession will respect my wishes.

As far as I know once its on a will then they have to respect your wishes but not 100% sure

No it's still up the the Doctor treating you. As far as I understand more Doctors are willing to try to respect your wishes but some will insist on trying every avenue.

My Father had requested no further intervention and his Hospital Consultant interviewed both my Father and I before he cancelled the intravenous medications and fluids that were keeping him alive. That Consultant was the person who convinced me that I needed to make a Living Will if I didn't want my family, and any Doctor to have to go through the same traumatic experience.

Oh I will be going down that road so as well because under no circuimstances do I want any complications and I dont want to be brought out of any coma and living like a veg for my natural days
