How can I ban someone from my Wireless Connection?
 

Hi, I am the owner of my wireless virgin internet connection. we are living three persons in a single house. We have three laptops. I want to share my internet connection with one person only. So I write the wireless password on one's laptop. But the windows he is using seems very modern, so that he can see the password when he clicks on ' show characters' in the network option. Usually its not possible to see passwords after connecting the net, but his windows is different. So that he can see my password and the third person also getting access to internet on his laptop (third persons). But I want to give access only to the second person, I dont want that third person to get access into my net. So, how can I bann him from my network so that he will not be able to log in my net if he get the passwords though?

Usually by adding the MAC address of the person's wireless adapter to a blocked list in the router.

Wireless MAC Filtering would be better then only permissible macs would be allowed.

Wireless MAC filtering is trivially easy to bypass.

Set a new password, don't tell the third person, and tell the second person that if he shares it with the third person you'll remove his access as well.

thank you so much for the replies. actually i dont know what is MAC filter. If you kindly tell me all the details about the steps i have to do with this mac filter that will be very helpful for me. What is a MAC filter? is this a software or net address? where can i get this software. probably my router is Netgear.

A MAC address is a fixed addreess* associated with a network interface,

This is a MAC address: 00-15-C5-3F-E4-1C(it may sometimes be shown without the hyphens).

A MAC filter is built into your router, and will allow you to limit connections to PC's with certain MAC addresses.


*the pedants on here will pont to the fact that it can be changed, but every network interface has a default MAC that is unique.

Your netgear router may already supply the MAC address of connected devices, if not you need to find it out from the other person, this may give a heads up to how you are limiting access and encourage a way round your blocking to be found.

Wrong way round, you don't need your MAC address, you need the MAC address of the person's PC that you want to allow to use your connection, you "program" their MAC address in to a list on your router.

Can I point out that why don't you go to a "wired network" from a wireless network to vastly improve your problem..... I know that it going to have a one problem as he just can plug in his ethernet jack into the network. But it's will cut out if not most his hijacking of the formentioned network. Tho you can cut off that network port when you know hes jacked into your network from the router.(wired + home plugs)

To say wireless network are so easy to jack into with the right know how is all too easy these days, just like bluetooth in moblies while on the move. So thats why I have put the "wired network" option up for a the above reason, hence more secured network & better connetion speeds.

Why do you think gamers use a wired connection than a wireless connection .. write back with the answers on a post card to..... :p:

Well it gives a better connection plus your game doesn't bug out while in the throw of things during game play.
Theres others things too, so do add if you feel able to folks.
