Moving from cable to adsl - do I need a new router?

Hi

Got a Linksys wrt54 router attached via ethernet to VM cablem modem.

Moving to ADSL. Do supplied ADSL modems have an ethernet port? Can I connect my router direct or do I have to buy an adsl router?

Thanks

Morning. :)

Most ADSL providers sell ADSL routers, and these can plug straight into your Linksys router. There are ADSL single-port modems available, but around the same price point as the 4-port routers.

You sure you don't want to rephrase that?

Thanks but I just want to know whether the adsl modem that will be supplied will likely have ethernet or not. I think this depends upon whether the adsl modem has an inbuilt single port router. I gather that the router func in an adsl modem can sometimes be disabled thereby allowing another router to be conected to it and thereby alleviate the need to use a adsl router. Any experience of what is being supplied currently?

ADSL ISPs are increasingly supplying an ADSL modem/router that by itself does the same job your Linksys router and VM modem are currently doing separately.

If you get an ADSL modem/router you will not need to use the Linksys unit. If you want to use the Linksys unit, then you will need a standalone ADSL modem. You don't see so many of those any more because it's a waste of space having a separate modem and router on your desk when you can combine the two into one.

The only standalone ADSL modem I ever owned was the one supplied to me by VM when I first took up their ADSL service, about 3-4 years ago. That was a Thomson Speedtouch, and was USB only ... no use for connecting to a router.

99% of ADSL ISP supplied modems will have the standard 4 ethernet cable ports on the back. The days of USB modems is gone, fortunately. So, you should be able to take the cable out of your existing router and plug it straight into the new one.

No, I was quite clear, I thought. PPPoE on the Linksys router to control the ADSL router. ADSL LAN -> Linksys WAN.

What Charlie Bubble said is correct. All ADSL routers have anywhere from 1 to 4 ethernet ports. What you have to be careful with is the IP address ranges.
