Change from WEP to WPA2 encryption

Hello,

I just changed my router from WEP to WPA2+WPA encryption. I then changed my Windows 7 and Vista PCs so that they worked OK with the network. When I came to my XP computer I was unable to make it connect. When I look at available networks on the XP PC, it says that the network is a WPA connection and asks for the encryption key. I put it in but the computer still won't connect. It supplies no error messages. Does anyone know why this is happening?

Did you change the name of your network?
Try deleting saved networks and trying again.

There was no change to the network and it can be seen in the list of wireless networks.

When I change my security password, which I do on a regular basis as the kids annoy my, one of the machines will fail to connect until I've removed saved networks and restarted the comp. It's never been the same comp twice. The SSID or network name never gets changed.

XP needs an update to support WPA2
That could be your problem.

Re: Change from WEP to WPA2 encryption

I've just checked and there is a hot fix to allow WPA2 to work on XP. The trouble is...I am using SP3 and so the hotfix is already in place. This means that I still have a problem...

Sorry to be dim...what is meant by "remove saved networks"

One thing that happens is = I type in the network key (26 chars long) and the next time I look at it it's less long. Almost as if the key is not saved. I've seen this before btw (over the years)

Meld, which wireless card have you got in the XP machine as some older cards didnt support WPA2 at all.

Re: Change from WEP to WPA2 encryption

Most routers use a hash algorithm to take a simple password and convert it to a huge random like number to be used as the key.

Sadly not every router maker use the same algorithm so you may want to try an option (if it exists) to enter the number directly.

Re: Change from WEP to WPA2 encryption

The card is an ASUS PCI VEN 1814 etc.....

Can't find any drivers at all on the web. It is exactly 4 years old. WPA2 became mandatory in March 2006 so this PC is right at the beginning of that. There is a possibility that it doesn't conform

Meld, if you post the whole hardware ID string, it might identify which ralink adapter it is and then whether is wpa2 compliant.

If it is an ralink rt2500 card (v Likely) have a read of this.

Hello Aragorn (son of Arathorn)

Thanks for your help.

The whole thing says: PCI\VEN1814&DEV_0201SUBSYS_130f104.3&rev_01

Hope that makes sense!

Re: Change from WEP to WPA2 encryption

That only seems to come up with an RTL8187B chip. Is your adapter on board or a USB plugin?

[Edit] Ooops, sorry, missed off the 3 after the . 130f1043 is the RT2500

Re: Change from WEP to WPA2 encryption

There is a driver here that claims to cover your card, which is indeed an RALink rt2500. Or another here.
I suggest you have a look the link in the previous post.

Re: Change from WEP to WPA2 encryption

Just to let you know, the Ralink driver you found for me worked just fine. That was the one available on the Driver Guide website.

Thanks
