Drops on 50mb

I was having drops on my 50mb, engineer came out ran some test and put a small square metal box on the back of the modem, cant remember exactly what it said but said something Db may 3Db or 6Db?

Sounds like an attenuator to me, I think it alters the signal strength as it passes through it - I'm sure one of our resident techs will confirm for sure though.

OK thanks, well he also left what looks like a huge PDA next to my TV so called VM and they said they will arrange for him to come back round and pick it up after 6 as I'm back at work now.
