New 50 meg install goes slow every 5am
Hi,
We moved house over xmas and are finally back in a cabled area. :D I jumped at the chance to move from ADSL2+ (22 meg sync) over to 50 meg cable, and haven't regretted it yet! The install team were excellent, friendly and highly professional. I've got a rock solid 6.x MB/sec connection and couldn't be happier! However, I do have a question that may be a little strange, but I'm curious now! I have health problems and usually find myself up at strange hours unable to sleep. I've noticed that my download speed, which is generally 6.x MB/sec rock solid (meaning my connection graph looks like this: /------------\) goes, well, 'weird' at around 5am every morning. Speeds become incredibly erratic, jumping between 1.5MB/sec and 3.5MB/sec but never able to reach normal speeds. The connection (downstream throughput) graph on my client then looks like this: /-\/\/-\/\/\/\. It lasts about 10 minutes, and then jumps back to 6.x MB/sec for the rest of the day. Nothing to complain about, I know! But I really am just curious. I've tried several usenet NSPs (providers) during this 'funny' period, and although their speeds are different from each other during this time, they're all well below par. FTP is also affected, so it's definitely not an NSP issue. Maybe something being rebooted on the WAN-side? Another type of scheduled WAN-side network event? It's a bit coincidental that it happens at around 5am-ish (I haven't checked the exact time) every morning, and there's nothing scheduled on my PC for then. Anyway I just wondered if anyone could shed any light on the matter? I did notice some entries in the modem log, but these didn't happen during any other of the "5am dips" this week. About the only thing that did jump out at me in the stats (and I know very little about cable, having been an ADSL2+er for years) was that the uncorrectable errors on the downstream are way, way higher on channels 2 and 3 compared with the low entries for channels 1 and 4. That could be normal though. :p: Here's my stats just in case. I'm on the Newton-le-Willows network/UBR btw, and as I said I'm over the moon with my connection so this is definitely not a complaint. :) I hope the following isn't TMI, I just wanted to make sure I didn't leave you helpful folks waiting around for me to answer YOUR questions when it's me bugging you for help to begin with! Thanks in advance for any input, this seems a great forum so I'll be sticking around. https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2010/01/31.png http://www.pingtest.net/result/7983742.png Code:

Your stats look fine so maybe a call to the 50Mb support team on 0800 052 0431 after 0800 today is in order and they can check your connection.

Re: New 50 meg install goes slow every 5am
I don't think that'd be necessary Moldova, I don't want to be wasting anyone's time. As I said it only happens for 10 to 20 mins a day, at the same time, and I'm getting a nice solid 6.x MB/sec the other 23 hours and 50 minutes a day so definitely can't be a fault. I'm just a curious soul and wondered if anyone had any experience or ideas. :D
Many thanks for taking time to reply. |

Your event log from the modem might reveal what's going on at the times in question.

Re: New 50 meg install goes slow every 5am
Something is happening during that period which is causing noise on the network. There could be a variety of causes either way it is likely to be a long and painstaking investigation.
VM will usually be investigating repetitive noise spikes of this kind as a matter of maintenance however it may not have a high priority unless it has been reported by customers. May be worth reporting just to get it logged. |
