Why do people get such a kick.

I was reading several newspapers today, and l came across a news item on an holiday island in the Caribbean, called St Martin, where the runway is so short, that jumbo jets have to come down very low to use the full length of the runway. And the holidaymakers get a kick of standing vertically underneath the plane as it nearly hits the runway.

It reminds me of the days, when l use to go to a certain part of Heathrow airport, where you could wave at the pilot as he came into land or when Concorde came in and it was brilliant.

It is such an adrenaline rush.:)

reminds of when i was in the army Arthur based in dover back in '81 .I used to do a lot of sub aqua diving in the harbour and one day a ferry came over the top of us as we were skimming the sea bed ,we could feel the thump of the engines and then a big shadow comes accross quite scary the first time

I'd love to go there one day. It is at Princess Juliana airport and on Maho beach. There is a bar that has all the plane arrival times on a surf board by the beach.

Plenty of photos on airliners.net here:

Actually - the pilot is probably just enjoying the view as the auto pilot lands it. The VFRs will tell the plane how long the runway is and other info (elevation etc) so the plane lands itself :)

Reminds me abit like when I saw a video that showed a plane turning pretty low over a village as it was going into a landing. I can't remember where it was.

We have this fascination about watching planes land, I can never understand how the damn things stay up in the air.

In fact, isn't there an airport, where planes have to turn sharply and go between tower blocks before they can land, l don't know where the airport, but its scary.
