BT HomeHub latencies

Why are they so dire?

When pinging internal network devices on this network, all connected to the HomeHub, the latencies are >1ms-2ms at most. However, when I ping something outside my network, a host somewhere on the Internet, my HomeHubs latency goes to 99-100ms each time. Now, I'm assuming that's because its having to use the modem too, rather than just the router.

Comparing the translation latencies between this BT HomeHub (100ms) and my parents old Telewest Motorola Surfboard (10ms) which they still use on Virgin Media.

Is that because the ADSL modem has to convert to analogue and the Cable modem doesn't? Are the latencies that high for that sole reason?

Sounds more like a poor connection. It's got nothing to do with ADSL per se. My pings to BBC are < 20ms (on BE ADSL)

Yet when I ping the router from my PC, I get 1ms pings. But that's because my ping doesn't need to go through the modem/over the Internet, only through the internal switch. When I go through the modem, it goes up to 100.

Just sounds like a poor internet connection, you shouldn't be seeing latencies that high even on ADSL
