Universal Remote Control question
 

Hi all

I have what is probably a silly question (but I guess it’s matter of opinion if it’s silly or not :D ) ……

Basically, I’m looking to get a new URC, probably a One For All or similar. At the moment I’m using a clunky old One For All Topline 8, which (as well as not working on DVD players) doesn’t really seem to have any functions for my Samsung STB other than turn it on and off, scan the channels one by one and a sort of ‘back’ button (that goes to the last watched channel) and numeric keypad (which assumes that I know channel number I want to watch of course!)

I was hoping someone could recommend a multi-device URC (preferably a One For All model) that is known to access other useful/common STB features, especially calling the TV/channel guide to screen.

I use a Harmony 885 with mine, although i had to re-learn some bits, it seems to work fine.

Harmony One here, great remote and well worth the money (for the macros alone).
Can be a little fiddly to setup though.

Hmmm, don't know why I didn't think of looking at the Logitech URC's, as I already use quite a few of their products (a couple of keyboards, mice and the Alto). Their remotes are a bit out of my price range right now, maybe I'll take a look around eBay or somewhere.

Does the Harmony 885 replicate the full Virgin RC functions?

The 885 and the one are quite expensive, although the One can be had occasionally around the £80 mark form Amazon and well worth the money. They do have others in their price range like 525, has all the same great features with a few limitations like the number of device, no colour scree. The build quality is not as goo as the more expensive ones but does the same job, well worth picking up and trying one out before spending lost of money.

Keep an eye on Amazon and Play as they discount them every now and then.

Yeah I got my Harmony One for £88 delivered from Misco, they don't seem to sell it a tall any more. :td:

Mine can do all the usual stuff, plus the recorded bit and playback etc so i guess yes.

If you go onto their site you can do a virtual setup thing to test it out against what kit you have. Also you could try AVforums for a used one :D

As a temporary solution I picked up a bargain Philips URC (which is actually quite good, does everything the original STB remote does) at T K Maxx this afternoon, which seems to everything I need it to do at the TV end of my flat. I decided on one of the top of the range Logitech remotes as a permanent solution to playing with all my other electrical toys ...... when I saved a few more pennies :D
