D-Link Cable Routers
 

Need a new router. Now had a Belkin N and Netgear N, both packed up and both left dead spots in my house.

Looking at DIR-655, DIR-825 or DIR-855. Specifically like the latter two because I've found some 9 dBi aerials, hopefully to get rid of that dead spot!
What do you guys think?

i've had both the DIR-825 and now have the DIR-855 both are the best routers i've ever bought never had any drop-outs and i used to have dead spots but not since buying these, and if you wonder why i changed from one to the other just because i liked it :-)
but my personal recommendation would be to spend the bit extra and buy the DIR-855

I have the DIR-655 which I only use wired, I got it to replace my old £20 D-Link which ran for years without a glitch, only upgraded because it couldn't handle the full 50Mb.
The D-Link firmware is fast, feature rich and rock solid.

All the models you have listed are future proof with Gb switches throughout and upgradeable antenna's, although I am more than pleased with the 655 if I was buying today I would probably go for the 855 as saabmania suggests, your experience with the router will soon have you forgetting the initial cost.

I won't mention the POS Netgear I was forced to buy from VM when I upgraded to 50Mb as it's still a sore point with me. :mad:

Haha, apart from the obvious LCD screen. are there any difference between the 825 and 855?

D-Link DIR-655 is a good shout. Iv`e read on smallnetbuilder.com forum that a few people have had `issues` with the 825 firmware(whether this is overblown i don`t know)

No not really i like the LCD screen but other than looks they seem fairly similar

personally i never had any problems but yes your right there have been people with some issues with the firmware, but i'm sure they did release an update which sorted most problems out :)

hmmm, thanks for the reply and link.... now a question !

I thought the aerials, in order to be suitable for Dual band, needed to be 5.0mhz compatible, because whilst 5mhz versiosn are suiatble for 2.4mhz, the reverse is not true. I ran into some posts about this last night while looking around, but dont have the links to hand right now, but none gave a difinative answer as to which particular aerial was tested and workin gon these units, so was hoping he might have done al the research already that i was going to have to do :p (lazy i know)

States they are 5.2 GHz, haven't arrived yet though (coming from HK)

hmm, ok thanks, looks like you got a good price on them too.

i'm sort of leaning back towards getting a Netgear WDNR3700, which has internal antenna's so no option to change them like you can with external ones (or at least not so easily) but the link and ifon is still good, thank you

I know it is late in the debate; I have a D-Link 635 (3 external sticks) been using for a year now with Dell and Tosh lappys plus Medion tower - no probs, rock solid. So this is my vote for D-Link.

It's arrived, great looking router, don't have current hardware to test speeds but seems alright. 9dbi aerials added about 8% signal on 5 ghz frequency, but lost 15% on 2.4? :S

gone back to original aerials. now just need a way to get it to the room in the house which refuses to get signal..
