Cable router speed advice
 

Hi,
Please can anybody advise; I am on VM 10 Mbps, live in a terraced. Laptop will be used upstairs etc for browsing, some DVD watching/downloading train simm., some multi use ie citrix, not online gaming.

I am buying a router for my sons laptop & looking at buying at least a 150 N speed Belkin router @ £60 approx. I have been advised to go for 300 N+ & pay approx £80.

What I can't understand prior to purchase is; if the speed at which it comes in at, up to 10 Mbps, how can it run quicker than this from ie router to laptop, up to to 300 Mbps or is it from router to laptop is faster?

Basically, that 300 mbps connection is the connection from router to the laptop but you are restrained to using 10 mbps on the internet, as that as your maximum connection speed. however, if you are transferring files from computer to computer (not using internet) then with the right equipment, you will get up to 300 mbps speeds. hope this helps. :)

It's the same with wired routers, most will connect to current PCs at 100Mbit full duplex, while the broadband modem connection was made at:
1. 10Mbit half duplex link, 128k - 2Mbit data (old STB)
2. 100Mbit link, 10, 20 or 50Mbit data.

Speed translation is a pretty standard feature, your router will also handle connections between PCs with old 10Mbit interfaces, 100Mbit and any wireless speed possible.

One thing, unless you need firebreathing wireless performance and have some clear channel space, 300N is likely to cause and suffer more congestion due to lack of space, in fact, adding channel bonding to the specification seems a grossly irresponsible move, when there are only 3-4 non overlapping channels, also competing with video senders, 2.4G wireless mice/keyboards and goodness knows what else.

In practice, it seems many 300N devices will select 150N mode unless you choose to enable channel bonding.

Hi,
Thanks for all the advice. I bought a Belkin N router from PCW, it was prity easy to set up with the set up disc. The wireless connection works really well & stable.

I understand the Belkin N1 Vision router has Gigabit Lan and i know my motherboard has this too. So if they were connected with an ethernet cable i assume they would communicate with each other at the Gigabit speed??
