Poor sound quality on HD channels

I have an optical cable running between my V+ box and my 5.1 amp. All SD channels sound perfect, but as soon as I switch to an HD channel I get popping noises and crackling.
Does anyone else experience this? It's putting me off watching the HD channels!

Is my V+ box faulty?

Thanks

Have you switched the HDMI overide on in Audio & video settings on the V+ box?

It might be irelevent, I am just curious to know if it happens with it on or off. If it happens on both then there could be a signal issue.

Has the optical cable got plenty of flexiblilty?

It's not just you handsy - I get the same. Not all channels though. HDMI override is on but noticeably on BBCHD and ESPNHD...the same popping. I think BBC were aware of the 5.1 problem but I'm not sure if it's been fixed or it affects everyone.

For the record, I have tried the optical out on BBCHD from my FreesatHD box and still the same. So it's either BBCHD or my amp :(

FYI, I had this the *very* first time I hooked my V+ up. After a reboot it went away and never came back in two years.

Trust me I've rebooted about a gazillion times! ;)

I would get this reported to faults mate. It could a problem from the broadcaster which could be effecting many in an area but some will not know if they do not have an amp or use optical.

Will try the 'HDMI Audio Override' settings tonight before calling in the fault. Thanks all.

Sorry for tardy reply!
I turned the 'HDMI audio override' setting on/off, and now I get no crackling audio on HD channels! Bug?

Was the crackling coming from the TV speakers? It happens if you give a stereo-only device a Dolby signal. I suspect you have made the problem go away by setting the V+ output to stereo.

If you read my 1st post you'll see I'm running an optical cable from the V+ box to my 5.1 amp. Thanks

Re: Poor sound quality on HD channels

Yes, I know. My question is what does your TV do when it receives a Dolby signal (over the HDMI). The V+ outputs the same audio format on optical and HDMI, so if you are sending 5.1 to your amp, your TV is getting it too. A stereo-only TV will decode this as crackles.

The usual solution is to turn the TV volume down when using the amp.

Ah OK sorry.
My TV speaker is OFF, and always has been. The crackling was coming from my 5.1 system only.

Oh, OK. So do you have the audio override on or off now?
