Laptop forgets to connect to router
Just wanted to ask a little advice
Ive recently purchase a new Linksys WRT610n Router, which ive set up for 1. Laptop (Acer) wireless 2. PC Wireless 3. Xbox 360 (wired) 4 PS3 (wired) When I first configured this new router, it was via ethernet to the laptop, and once sorted I removed the ethernet and established a wireless connection. From there I then set up the connections for my other kit. The only problem I have ( and its not a major one ) is that every time the Laptop is turned off at night and then turned on the following day. It wont connect to the wireless network unless I go into the linksys software (on the laptop) and tell it manually to connect. Which it does and then all is well with the world. Any advice for a novice |
Re: Laptop forgets to connect to router
Personally, I'd remove the linksys wireless manager and let windows deal with connections. Generally speaking, I find third party wireless management tools create more problems than anything.
Remove it and connect via the windows wifi manager |

fair enough will give it a go, its a shame really because I like its simplicity of it.

Re: Laptop forgets to connect to router
Just out of interest, you're not using Vista are you? with the SSID set to not broadcast, I noted that you have to specifically tell the connection to connect when hidden in windows, dunno if its also a feature of the linksys wireless manage manager as well.

I think the laptop is XP but I will have to confirm when I get home as I didn't take much notice of the wife's laptop.:) I use the Linksys manager software at present, which shows all devices past and present seen by the router, so not sure what you mean by "hidden in windows" Thanks |

The only issue I had initially was that little scrote had hacked into my new router and changed the passphrase etc so I couldnt connect wirelessly anymore. So in effect it did me a favour because I did a hard rest of the router and then chose to uninstall the Linksys wireless manager software. Thanks for the info guys. |

I set my SSID to not broadcast as I have to use WEP encryption (my primary, older; laptop only supports WEP) so not broadcasting the SSID in an area where there are 10+ networks is just an extra layer of security. And yes the admin password of the router is some God awful combination of letters and numbers so it's as secure as I can make it without MAC filtering and I haven't been bothered to get that sorted out yet. |

Do you know where that is? As both my parents laptop would connect to my linksys router with SSID not broadcasting, but my laptop, xbox 360 & PSP all connected. If I can set it to not broadcast I'll be happier. I'm using the window network manager and not linksys. |
