Belkin Router - Pulling my hair out!

...and I haven't got that much left as it is.

Firstly the equipment. Belkin wireless router F5D8633. Firmware up to date. Laptop is a Dell Studio 15. All power settings as they should be (its not an issue with the laptop as several other laptops from friends have the same problem)

The problem: after a period of not using the internet, the router drops internet connection.

- the laptop can still see the wireless network but it can't connect to it
- the router shows all lights as usual
- only fix I have is to restart router, then it works fine
- the setting around inactivity is switched off in router settings

I have trawled the internet and can't find a solution. I have fixed various issues along the way, i.e. laptop dropping connection during use.

But this is the last one outstanding. Can't find a Nailed Up setting or anything like that. All drivers are up to date. The ISP can see this happening and the line is fine... the issue is with the router.

I'm at the end of my teather so will buy a new router soon!

Any ideas? I'm not that technical so please use dummy speak.

Re: Belkin Router - Pulling my hair out!

I had the same problem with a linksys wrt54G2. I had a desktop running XP connected wired and a laptop on Vista connected wirelessly. I had configured the desktop to have a fixed IP on the LAN and the laptop was left as dynamic. The result was the router failed to update DHCP and the internet dropped out randomly although the LAN always stayed connected.

Like you I searched and failed to find an answer so did some experimenting.

I first tried configuring a static IP for the laptop as well and then switched off DHCP in the router. I have had no further problems.

I guess I just got lucky.

Maybe worth you trying it out?

Step by step guide to set up a static IP for various OS.
http://www.portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm

Once done for both/all machines on your local net then open your routers config, find the DCHP server section and disable it. Save and Exit.

Hopefully problem solved? :)

Still got the issue.

I'm going to change the router and see if that helps.
