No Net: Windows 7 to XP
 

Hello

My W7 PC can't see my XP PC.
I can ping it though
When I do NET VIEW it can't see it

When I NET VIEW from the XP machine I can see the W7 machine

Firewall is temporarily switched off the XP machine

Any ideas about this behaviour?

I would really like my W7 PC to network with my XP machine!

Got the same setup as you. Win7 laptop and xp desktop.
All i can say is, it`s hit and miss if it can see it or not. There doesnt seem to be any valid reason why one day it can see it and then 2 days later it cant.
Easiest way to do it is to install the Network Magic basic, which is free, then let network magic do its thing, then you will be able to see your xp machine.

Google "Network Magic". It's a paid for software now owned by Cisco I think, with a free period to start with. It maps your net and troubleshoots problems, but once you get used to it it times out and you have to buy a licence. Earlier versions were free so I think they've sold out now. Still it's good.

As an alternative there is Spiceworks which is free. I've just started using this so I won't recommend it yet...but it looks like a useful network utility

Well I've spent a bit of time fiddling with it. I would say:
It's a bit cluttered
It's very powerful
The backup is great (forums, webinars etc)
It can't see all my network for some reason

Are the PC's both in the same workgroup?

Have you got both relevant PC DNS names in the hosts files?
